DOGE Accessed Private Data and Mass-Fired Workers but Failed to Cut Spending
NEWS & RESEARCH
When led by Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) conducted mass layoffs of federal employees under the guise of "eradicating waste" and dismantling DEI initiatives. Reports indicate DOGE staff used ChatGPT to identify grant cancellations and gained unauthorized access to sensitive Social Security Administration (SSA) data. The Musk-led DOGE produced about $1 billion in durable savings, about one-tenth of 1 percent of what he aimed for.

ANALYSIS & OPINION
A New York Times analysis reveals that despite firing civil servants and stripping public aid, DOGE failed to reduce federal spending. Most claimed savings were labeled an "accounting mirage," as overall spending actually increased. Furthermore, Los Angeles Times columnist Michael Hiltzik warned that DOGE’s breach of SSA privacy could permanently shatter public confidence in the program.

HOW TO FIX IT
Federal action:
Protect Data Privacy: Pass the Privacy Act Modernization Act to restrict government use of personal data and help constituents file Privacy Act requests regarding DOGE’s data collection.
Defend Federal Workers: Support the Federal Workforce Caucus to safeguard civil servants from arbitrary mass firings.
Ensure Accountability: Continue investigating DOGE’s misuse of sensitive data and support legal challenges demanding accountability for its actions.
Legislation: S.1208 - Privacy Act Modernization Act of 2025
