Intel Community Finds Iran's Firepower Remains Robust, Contradicting Claims of Trump and Hegseth

NEWS & RESEARCH

Contrary to assertions by President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, U.S. intelligence officials maintain that Iran retains approximately 70% of its drone and missile capacity and has restored operational access to 30 of the 33 missile sites it maintains along the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, alarm grows regarding depleted American munitions, a topic Hegseth addressed before House and Senate appropriators in May 2026. Hegseth dismissed these warnings, criticizing both Democrats and the press about the stockpiles and coverage of the Iran War.

ANALYSIS &OPINION

Apparently angered by investigative news reports contradicting administration claims that Iran’s military has been decimated, the Department of Justice issued subpoenas to the Wall Street Journal on May 13, 2026, seeking records related to reporting on confidential deliberations concerning the Iran war. While the Journal detailed these private executive branch discussions, New York Magazine highlighted the Trump's months-long campaign against the media. In April 2026, Trump specifically targeted the New York Times, characterizing its reporting as "seditious.”

HOW TO FIX IT

Federal action:

  • Congress should enforce the War Powers Resolution Act of 1973, since the Iran war has gone on well beyond the 60-day period after which its approval is mandated.

  • Congress should pass S.J.Res.185, a joint resolution to direct the removal of US forces Iran that have not been authorized by Congress.

  • Conduct oversight hearings to assess the gap between the administration’s assertions and the actual Battle Damage Assessments held by the intel community.
