Exposed Fraudulent DataBase of Supposedly Dead Immigrants

Back in the early days of Trump 2.0, the president gave his biggest campaign donor, the chainsaw-wielding Elon Musk, carte blanche to slice up the federal government as the head of the US DOGE Service. Musk promised $2 trillion in cuts; he delivered about 1,000th of that. But DOGE did shutter USAID. And it was a key partner in the Department of Homeland Security’s plan to falsely classify as many as 2.7 million living immigrants as dead, thereby depriving them of bank accounts and thus the ability to rent an apartment or buy insurance. The administration’s goal was apparently to make immigrants so miserable they “self-deported” or visited a Social Security office, where they could be arrested.

Jeremiah Schofield, who then headed up SSA’s IT modernization, went to the agency’s general counsel who confirmed that it’s illegal to falsify records. Schofield tried to get his superiors to speak up. But when that failed, he put his career on the line and blew the whistle to Congress on the fraudulent dead immigrant database. It made a difference. Sen. Elizabeth Warren denounced the “illegal attempt by DOGE to weaponize Social Security to carry out Trump’s cruel immigration agenda.” And once Musk left DOGE, the Trump administration backed down and revoked DOGE’s access to SSA data.
